Chapin Hall Points System and In-House Lottery
In order to reward undergraduate members of the College, and to provide an equitable means for determining who lives in what room during the following year, our forefathers and foremothers created the Chapin Hall points system and in-house lottery. The system was overhauled during 1998, and in its present form consists of a two stage process. The stages are Housing Eligibility and In-House Lottery. Competition for rooms during the following year is based upon points and bonus points which may be earned in any of several ways.
I. Housing Eligibility
If a resident or non-resident wishes to live in Chapin during the next school year, he/she must earn points each quarter. The points requirement is twofold: one Fireside point and one Committee point. The Fireside point may be earned by attending three (3) firesides, and the Committee point may be earned by completing work for three committees, which are enumerated in the Chapin Constitution
II. In-House Lottery
The In-House Lottery is something of a misnomer. Once eligibility has been determined, occupants are allowed to choose their rooms in the
following order: 1) Squatters rights apply. Any individual can claim right to the room they currently occupy and bring in another roommate on
squatters' rights. If both roommates desire squatter's rights, but with a new roommate, the rights apply to the roommate combination with the
more points. The singles are not open to squatters' rights. 2) Occupants will choose their roommates for the following year, and the
roommate combination will then choose their room in order of combined points from highest to lowest. 3) The single's occupancy will be
determined by the individual with the highest points who desires the room. 4) If there are an even number of people staying then the single
may not be occupied, but is given to an incoming freshman.
